Alternative Expressions is the creative brainchild of Bradford, PA, natives Ken and Paula Johnson Alter. Our expertise in 35mm, medium format and digital photography, web and graphic design, public relations, and multi-media production illustrates the convergence of art and technology and constitutes the AE Difference.

Ken’s background includes commercial and non-profit web design, and wedding photography. His talent in utilizing our state-of-the-art web design software is evident as you peruse the NEW Alternative Expressions web site you see here. Ken is certified in web creation and design through courses taken at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and Rockhurst College. He is currently enrolled in four advanced courses in design, layout, interactivity and integration that will further enhance his technical and design skills. He is also an active member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), PPA of Pennsylvania (PPA of PA) and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP).

Ken constantly travels to seminars and clinics striving to seek out the latest in ideas, equipment, software and creativity in order to keep our studio on the cutting edge of today's photography. Any photographer that says they know everything has given up on improving their work - he always tries his best to go beyond. Today's photography is much more than a camera, you must have expert knowledge of computers, excellent Photoshop skills and the best commercial labs available for a high quality finished product for your clients.

Paula is also no stranger to the arts and communications media. She formerly owned and operated Portraits by Paula, specializing in family, child, pet and wedding photography. Her pet photography may be remembered from the early SPCA calendars. Paula’s tenure in BRMC’s Public Relations Department honed her design, web site maintenance, layout and marketing copy writing skills.

You may also be familiar with Paula as founder and chairman of First Night Bradford between 1997-2000. In 1998, she spearheaded the “City Hall of Wishes”, a multi-media project that won First Night International’s coveted Creative Programming Award. Her PR and web site design skills were essential in positioning First Night Bradford as a local New Year’s Eve tradition.

The prints you receive from our studio are sent via satellite to nationally based professional film labs that take great care in the printing of your portraits and wedding albums. Some studios may print in-house to give you a quick result, but you can see the difference in the finished product. Just try to order a masonite mounted print with a pro sprayed finish and get it back in four or five days from a "quicky print" studio - quality takes time and it's worth the wait!
